Default Shields vs. Damage Type

Hello monks,

I have been moking quite a bit on RA and it's fun despite being a 'lower level of pvp' (no time/friends to get into organized PvP like HA/GvG/TA).

Currently at rank 3 gladiator most of which I earned monking the last few months, so I'm not a total noob but I have a shield question:

People often tell me to use shields vs. specific damage types (say +10 vs. blunt, piercing, fire, etc) and switch depending on the situation.

However, how can I tell if a Warrior, for example, is using a Hammer with an elemental prefix? Say it uses an Ebon Hammer, it will hit me for Earth damage, so switching to a +10 vs. Blunt shield will basically do nothing for me. Should I just switch anyway and hope it will be physical damage?

I currently use a shield with 20% chance of -5 damage, +30 health and -20% daze, with a Spear of Enchanting. I also have a high energy set (staff/wand).

Please let me know how you guys identify the damage you take.

If they're /E and using a conjure, that's the only way you can tell if there's an elemental prefix on their weapon. If you have a war with a hammer on your nuts, switch to a +armor vs blunt damage shield. If it happens to be ebon, so what, it's only RA.

At the start of the fight check /E physicals for conjures. Check what elements the elementalists are using and load 1-2 shield sets to your quick swap. Its only RA so its not so important and you can assume that the warrior will probably be using sundering anyway.. unless of course they have a clue.

Concerning the -5 Physical dmg (20%), its rather useless imo. Salvage it with a perfect kit and sell it.

the great majority of the wars you face in RA won't have an ele prefixed weapon, unless they are conjure (watch animations, keep tab focus on them if you're unsure). odds are they will do physical damage. the majority of the physical damage will be piercing (sins, rangers, paras) so that will be your primary shield set. some monks in ra even carry +60 while hexed sets for times when there's a necro-mes group.

a ton of physicals just use zealous vampiric or sundering, so no way around that, but basically /agree with everyone above me just check for /E and watch primary ele's attunements/precasts to see what they have.

I personally love the +60 while hexed shields.

I spent part of Sunday in TA with some PvE friends (I'm more PvP than PvE) I attempted to explain to the casters in my group why shield sets are importand and that they should use a PvP only so they could create one of every shield with vs +10 armor. None of them really understood why. But a sheild set reduces tons of damage when it's vs the proper attribute.

Chances are, 80% of the non-conjure warriors you face will have sundering (unless they are strong fiery dragon sword wammo). Plus, no one runs around with an elemental weapon if they're not conjure. It's even worse than sundering :<

On the contrary, you don't go after a paragon (lol who plays this?) or warrior without an elemental weapon. Albeit, you won't go after a monk with one if you have half a brain. Generally it will be Vampiric (Sword / Axe) / Zealous (Some high energy spamming bulds use one, fairly uncommon though) / Sundering (Axe/Hammer), which is obviously all physical damage, and primarily slashing.

My monk carries a +10 vs Slashing and Piercing, as well as condition shields and a hex set (that I rarely use).

How much dmg would the +8 armor u get from a shield reduce.. And how much dmg would it reduce to have +10 armor vs the dmg type?

Well, +40AL is 50% mitigation, and taking that down let's just say it's 12.5% mitigation.

+8 armor reduces damage by ~13%
+18 armor reduces damage by ~27%
